Superior Energy Performance (SEP)

Superior Energy Performance – Additional Requirements for Energy Management Systems is a specification for additional requirements beyond the ISO 50001 requirements that are needed for SEPcertification.

These specifications are related to energy management and energy performance and include performance achievement requirements. A central element of SEP is implementation of ISO 50001 with additional requirements to achieve and document energy performance improvements.

The SEP guidelines follow the same format as the ISO guidelines, so that titles, section numbers, etc., have been taken directly from the ISOstandard.

SEP provides three certification levels for targeted energy reduction on two pathways:

Energy Performance Pathway:

  • Silver - Meets 5% energy performance improvement over 3 years after the baseline period
  • Gold - Meets 10% energy performance improvement over 3 years after the baseline period
  • Platinum - Meets 15% energy performance improvement over 3 years after the baseline period

Mature Energy Pathway

  • Silver – Demonstrates an energy performance improvement of 15% or more over a 10 years after the baseline period and a score of at least 35 out of 100 on the SEP Industrial Facility Best Practices Scorecard.
  • Gold – Demonstrates an energy performance improvement of 15% or more over a 10 years after the baseline period and a score of at least 61 out of 100 on the SEP Industrial Facility Best Practices Scorecard.
  • Platinum – Demonstrates an energy performance improvement of 15% or more over a 10 years after the baseline period and a score of at least 81 out of 100 on the SEP Industrial Facility Best Practices Scorecard.
